Summer Wines Large

Summer Wines Large About this product

More than any other season, summer seems to require rethinking one's approach to wine. The reds of winter feel overwhelmingly heavy when the sun is high and the weather's hot.

During the summer, lightness and a refreshing simplicity trump almost any other consideration.

Catalan Eagle 2015, Terra Alta D.O.

Catalan Eagle white is a blend of 60% Garnacha Blanca, 25% Viognier and 15% Roussanne grapes, the two latter grape varieties originally coming from the Rhone. Catalan Eagle takes its name from the bird that soars above the nature reserve close to the 26-hectare organic vineyard in Terra Alta which is near Tarragona in southern Catalonia. This wine has an expressive nose of peaches, pears and grapefruit. On the palate, there is minerality, fruit and some warm, spicy notes. Round and full on the palate this is an aromatic wine with good acidity and a rich texture. Enjoy with seafood and paella.

The Charge 2014 Tempranillo/Garnacha, Rioja D.O.C.

This Rioja takes its name from the medieval knights and pilgrims who crossed the region on their way to Santiago de Compostela. Working with the great winemaker Rodolfo Bastida in Haro, Rioja Alta, this is a lovely, wine with excellent red cherry and strawberry fruit, refreshing acidity balanced with fine vanilla flavours from ageing in American oak. The Charge is made from grapes from all over the Rioja region and is a blend of 80% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha from four separate vineyard lots. A very easy to drink, modern Rioja to serve with grilled meats, barbecues and casual suppers.

Marigny-Neuf 2016 Rosé, Val de Loire

A rosé made from 60% Gamay, 20% Cabernet and 20% Pinot Noir grapes, grown in Vienne between the Loire Valley and Poitiers. This is an organic wine, produced with great care including two days cold maceration followed by five months ageing on the fermentation lees to add roundness and complexity to the wine. A fun loving wine with notes of guava, red currant and cherry with a creamy texture, this rosé loves being paired with salads, pizza and sunny aperitifs accompanied by big smiles and giggles. Serve chilled and enjoy now or for the next two years.

No Stone Unturned, Old Vine Garnacha / Carinena Catalunya, D.O. Terra Alta, 2013

Made from a blend of 62% Garnacha, 23% Carinena and 15% mix of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, this wine comes from Pepe Fuster’s stone covered 26-hectare vineyard in Terra Alta in Catalonia, north-eastern Spain. The Garnacha vines are nearly 50 years old and this age gives the wine great concentration and intensity with dark, spicy, blackberry fruit that has been seasoned and enhanced by 10 months new French oak barrels. No Stone Unturned is a big, serious wine that is ripe and juicy enough to be enjoyed now but will also last a good 8-10 years in bottle. Serve with cheeses, game and roast meats.

Domaine Boillot 2014 Brussellions, Moulin-à-Vent

A 1.3-hectare site sitting on top of a hill, northeast of Moulin. Here ancient alluvial soils with white sands are complemented by a high percentage of red granite. There is great energy here with spicy fruit and fresh, pure flavours. The wine is long and quite rich with very fine tannin structure. Louis Boillot describes it as the synthesis of the other two cuvées.

Libertà di Collazzi, IGT Toscana 2012

A superb Tuscan wine and at a fantastic price, Liberta 2012 is a very pretty wine with lots of appeal. A blend of Merlot, Syrah with a small proportion of Sangiovese, it has a bright velvet red colour and lovely fruit aromas of red and Morello cherries and damsons. The palate is silky-smooth with a fine balance between the fruit, oak and tannins. It is a delicious wine which can be served lightly chilled (around 14°C) to bring out the fresh, fruity characters. An excellent pairing for tomato-based dishes and grilled meats.
