This stunning 6-bottle selection contains:

Gravette de Certan, Bordeaux, Pomerol 2014

La Gravette, the second wine of Vieux Château Certan, is named after a parcel of vines located between Certan and Le Pin. 30% of VVC's crop is designated for La Gravette-mostly the younger vines and the Cabernets. The wine has a fresh, vibrant nose with aromas of autumn fruit and a hint of smoke. The palate is soft and fruity with great balance and a silky texture. This is a wine to be enjoyed young, to best appreciate its lovely fruit character, and served lightly chilled. A very pretty Pomerol.

La Parde de Haut Bailly, Bordeaux, Pessac-Léognan 2014

This is the second wine of the renowned Château Haut-Bailly. Clean tight tannins, the same blackcurrant cassis fruit spectrum but less intense than in the first wine but, great vibrancy. The wine has a pretty lift on the finish if not huge persistency, with tannins that are smooth, but present. Nicely placed, good poise. 56% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Cabernet Franc.

Jean Grivot, Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2008

This Clos de Vougeot is full-bodied, powerful, if a little temperamental in youth. A surly infant which develops superb refinement with age and requiring a good ten years to reveal its true potential and finesse.

Jean Grivot, Nuits S'-Georges "Aux Boudots" Premier Cru 2008

One of the estate's top wines grown on superb terroir on the 'Vosne' side of Nuits-Saint-Georges. It seemlessly blends the more powerful style of the Nuits and the exquisite elegance of Vosne-Romanée.

Jean Grivot, Vosne-Romanée "Les Beaux Monts" 2007

This magnificent estate, which is ideally situated in the centre of Vosne Romanée, holds some very old vines producing very concentrated, pure wines. Despite the being of village level, the cuvee merits an exclusive bottling and label which mentions this special lieu-dit of which Etienne Grivot is so fond.

You might think that a symposium is a meeting of academics or professionals to discuss their profession or debate current affairs, but it's also an excuse to drink. The term originated in ancient Greece and literally means, "drinking together". They were often held to celebrate the introduction of young men into aristocratic society. It would be overseen by a "symposiarch", an ancient version of a sommelier, who would decide how strong the wine for the evening would be on how serious the discussion.
