Wine, not flowers

This festive 3-bottle selection contains:

DOMAINE DES VALANGES, SAINT-VÉRAN 2014

This estate which has become one of our great favourites has a pretty nose with aromas of pears, green apples and a touch of pineapple. A round and complete white wine with good freshness and a touch of minerality on the palate. The finish is long and pure. This is an excellent Chardonnay with lots of character. Drink young with fish, seafood and white meat.

PESSAC-LÉOGNAN, THIENPONT SELECTION 2010

This 2010 Pessac Leognan has a deep garnet colour with a complex nose showing aromas of cassis, blackcurrants and bramble fruit. The palate is round and generous and full-bodied; supple tannins, with moderate structure from oak and a pretty persistence of dark fruit flavours. Long and well-balanced, this wine is full of character and is ready to drink now and will age for a further five years.

CHÂTEAU LOUBENS, SAINTE-CROIX-DU-MONT 1990

The piece de resistance of the evening will be a beautiful glass of sweet Bordeaux - from Sainte Croix du Mont. A gorgeous golden nectar!

It was Charlemagne who is credited for commissioning the invention of white burgundy. Not because he prefered white wine over red (in his day, most wines were quite pale and brown looking anyway) but after his long white beard became perpetually stained by red wines, he turned to white wines. One of Burgundy's greatest white wines, Corton Charlemagne is named in his honour.
